Is this really the same major as all those teaching jobs?

Not exactly. The official CIP-4 "Adult and Continuing Education" label is narrow, but the NCES crosswalk for this code pulls in every level of teaching. Yes and no. K-12 median sits around $62–65k depending on state — below other bachelor's-holders. But a real pension, summers off, and job security at tenured levels is worth a 15–25% "quiet raise" over a career. The bad-pay headline leaves out the benefits most private-sector jobs cut years ago.

Do I need a master's to teach?

To enter, no — bachelor's + license is enough in every state. But most teachers earn a master's within 5 years because most state salary schedules include a raise for it. Some districts pay tuition. Plan for it, but don't delay entering the classroom to get it.

Alternative certification vs. traditional program — which?

Traditional — 4-year ed degree, student-teaching, license on graduation. Alternative — a bachelor's in something else, then 1–2 years of accelerated certification while you teach (TFA, state residencies). Alt-cert fills hard-to-staff subjects and schools. Both work. Alt-cert is harder year one because you're learning to teach while teaching.

Will AI take teaching jobs?

Not Pre-K through 8th grade — the job is half childcare, behavior management, and social learning. AI will write lesson plans, grade worksheets, and help with differentiation. It will not run a classroom. Corporate L&D is more automatable than the K-12 classroom.

K-12 is a calling on a known salary curve. Corporate L&D pays more, grows faster (+11%), and has no behavior management — but has no summers, no tenure, and measures you quarterly. Many teachers pivot to L&D after 5–10 years and earn a 30–50% raise.
