§ I · At a glance

Despite the NCES label, this CIP spans every rung of teaching — Pre-K, K-12, postsecondary, and corporate training. Pay is predictable and the summer schedule is real. The ceiling isn't money — it's the students, the school you land, and whether you stay long enough to get good at it. Most teachers earn a master's within 5 years because most states raise pay for it.

§ II · Real talk

What we'd tell a younger sibling.

The good

Stable calendar. Real summers. Retirement plans most private-sector jobs quietly envy. Demand for K-12 teachers is regional but rarely zero — you can almost always move for the job if you need to.

The catch

K-12 pay peaks low. Most teachers earn a master's in their first 5 years to unlock the lane-change raise. Classroom prep and grading spill into evenings; the "part-time" school-hours myth doesn't match the work.

The ceiling

Corporate training and development (L&D) pays $65k+ and is growing 11% — many teachers pivot here after 5–10 years. Postsecondary and admin pay more but require more school. School leadership is its own track.

The AI part

AI drafts lesson plans and grades worksheets — things teachers already shortcut. It can't run a room of 28 nine-year-olds. Elementary and middle grades are the last places AI replaces, not the first.
