§ I · At a glance

Health and Wellness is the applied, community-facing health degree — lighter on epidemiology and statistics, heavier on coaching, education, and behavior change. The SOC crosswalk maps to just two roles (health educator $63k, community health worker $51k), but the real job market is broader — corporate wellness, fitness coaching, health coaching, nutrition education, and public-sector prevention. Treat this as a general health-behavior degree — stack a certification or specialty on top.

§ II · Real talk

What we'd tell a younger sibling.

The good

Community health workers (+11%) and corporate wellness roles are growing fast. The degree is applied and people-facing — less statistics than public health, more coaching and behavior change. Flexible fit for students who want health impact without clinical school. Entry-level health-educator roles exist at health departments, hospitals, insurers, and community nonprofits.

The catch

Pay starts low ($38–51k). The SOC system only maps 2 jobs, which means the degree doesn't have a well-defined career ladder. A lot of "health and wellness" roles are coaching or fitness-adjacent, which requires certifications (NBHWC, ACE, ACSM) rather than a degree. You're buying flexibility more than a direct pipeline.

The money path

Add credentials. NBHWC (National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach), RD (Registered Dietitian, requires master's + 1,200 hours), CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist), or CPT (Certified Personal Trainer). Corporate wellness managers clear $70–90k. Pivoting into nursing, PA, or public health for a master's is a common upgrade path — the BA is a good prereq if you like the helping-profession shape.

The AI part

Behavior change, coaching, and community health work are deeply human. AI reshapes intake screens, self-help content, and basic nutrition advice — but the in-person, relational work is durable. The exposed lane is generic health content writing; the safe lane is direct-contact work with patients, clients, or communities.
