Human Development and Family Studies
The people-reading degree that feeds a dozen graduate paths.
One of the best pre-grad-school undergrad majors for helping professions. HDFS prepares you cleanly for MFT, social work, OT, speech-language pathology, child life specialist, early intervention, and developmental psych PhD. The coursework is practical — you actually understand child development, family systems, and aging.
Bachelor's-only jobs pay the lowest of any top-50 major. Childcare ($32k), preschool teaching ($37k), and case-manager roles ($45–55k) are the core direct paths. If you're not planning grad school, your ceiling is around $55k in the career. This major is mostly useful as a grad-school prereq.
MFT or LCSW (2-year master's + licensure): $60–90k starting, $100k+ in private practice. OT (master's or doctorate): $95k median, strong demand. SLP (Speech-Language Pathology master's): $89k median, very strong demand. Child Life Specialist (master's): $50–70k, deeply competitive. Developmental psych PhD: academic or research track, $90k+ with 5–7 years of training.
AI is not replacing child development work, family therapy, or early-intervention services. These are deeply human, relational, high-context jobs. What AI reshapes: documentation, initial screenings, referral logic. Clinical and educator work — especially with young children — is among the most automation-resistant employment in the country.
