Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse Training
One year. Real license. Real work.
The cheapest, fastest legit health-care license. 12–18 months, under $15k at a community college, and you're licensed. Stable hiring — aging population keeps nursing-home and home-health demand high. Shifts and overtime can push earnings above the median fast.
Hospitals are hiring fewer LPNs and more RNs — scope-of-practice rules mean RNs can do more. Most LPN jobs are in nursing homes, home health, or clinics — lower pay than hospital work. Physical toll is real (lifting, long shifts). Burnout rates in long-term care are high.
LPN-to-RN bridge programs are the standard move — 1 to 2 extra years, a much bigger scope of practice, and $15–25k/year pay bump. Many employers pay tuition for LPNs who bridge. Don't plan your 30-year career on the LPN alone unless you love long-term care.
AI can't turn a patient, take vitals, or catch a change in breathing. Hands-on nursing is among the jobs most insulated from automation. What AI does change: documentation, scheduling, and triage alerts — less paperwork, more time with patients.
